Know Your Visa Type

The Embassy of Portugal is pleased to announce the opening of their Visa Application Centre operated by VFS Global Services Private Limited in New Delhi, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune.

The visa applications are to be submitted at the Portugal Visa Application Centre at New Delhi, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, or Bangalore. All applications will be assessed by the Embassy of Portugal, located in New Delhi.

The visa applications submitted at the Portugal Visa Application Centre at Mumbai and Pune will be assessed by the Consulate General of Portugal, located in Goa.

Schengen Common Information

Where to apply

The jurisdiction of the Consular Section of the Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi covers all India (except the States of Maharashtra and Goa and the Union Territories of Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli) and Nepal for short and long term visa.

The residents of the States of Maharastra and Goa and the Union Territories of Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli have to apply at the Consulate General of Portugal in Goa or at VFS Mumbai Visa Application Centre.

In the absence of Portuguese Missions in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the residents of these countries have to apply to the Embassy of France in Dhaka (for business and tourist visa), and Colombo (for business and tourist visa), which represent Portugal.

The long-term national visa (vg. research, study, work and family) for residents of Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka have to be submitted to the Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi.

The Portugal Visa Application Centre would accept applications for Airport Transit, Schengen Short Term Visa (Transit, Business, Tourist, Family Visit, Conference and others) and Long Term Visa (Research, Study/Training, Work, Family Reunion and others), to submit to the Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi. Applicants are requested to kindly read the information on this site carefully. The guidelines listed on this site are to help you prepare your documents as accurately as possible. This will reduce the chances of your application being delayed or declined due to inadequate or incorrect submission of documents.

Please note that you may be required to appear personally in the Visa Section at the Embassy of Portugal for an interview prior to a decision being taken on your application. The Visa Application Centre shall help you to take an appointment for the same.

Personal interviews are required at the Consulate General of Portugal in Goa for those applicants who have not travelled to any Schengen country within the last 3 years at the time of submission of visa. The Visa Application Centre shall help you take an appointment for the same.

Foreign National residing in India must submit valid permit to return to India.

The following essentials must be met by all applicants submitting their applications for visa:

  • Passport with at least three months validity from the date of arrival back in India
    The Embassy of Portugal does not accept additional pages inserted into passports. If you do not have a blank page to which a visa can be affixed, a new passport must be obtained before submitting your application. A single sided page is required to affix a visa but there should not be a valid visa on the back side of that page.
  • Relevant Forms & Photograph
    Fully completed application form appropriate to the type of visa and with two original passport-size photographs. The applicant has to complete all the points of the application forms clearly and in capital letters. Incomplete forms will not be accepted. Digital photographs are not acceptable (Photo Specification)
  • Children under 18 traveling without one or both parents or without a legal guardian must provide an affidavit for travel signed by both parents or by the parent or legal guardian not traveling and also a copy of passport's 1st and last page of parent.

How To Apply

Please note that the following essentials must be met by all applicants submitting their applications for visa.

  • Passport should have been issued within the previous 10 years.
  • Passport should have at least two blank pages.
  • Passport should have at least three months validity from the date of arrival back in India
  • Applications are only accepted within 3 months of the requested date of arrival
  • Relevant Forms & Photograph: Fully completed application form appropriate to the type of visa
  • Embassy of Portugal require a minimum of 15 calendar days for visa processing once the application reaches Embassy.. Please note that applications submitted to other VFS-offices than New Delhi will take another two days due to postal delivery.. For applications submitted in Mumbai to the Portugal Consulate in Goa, a minimum of 15 Calendar days is required (excluding VFS handling time) before the date of travel.
  • As part of the worldwide introduction of the Visa Information System (VIS), All Schengen consulates worldwide will be connected to VIS by the end of November 2015. For detailed Information click here.
  • Applicants who have given their biometrics previously and have since renewed their Passports are encouraged to enroll for their biometrics once again at the time of submission.

Application procedure

The VFS Portugal Visa Application Centres will accept visa applications from all nationals, who wish to travel to Portugal. VFS will submit all such visa applications to The Embassy of Portugal located in New Delhi and The Consulate of Portugal in Goa.

For applicants applying at VFS Mumbai and VFS Pune towards the Consulate General of Portugal, Goa please note:-

On the Portal das Comunidades Portuguesas Visas website applicants must select ‘Apply for a visa’ to initiate the Online form filling process.

At the end of completing the Online Visa Application Form you are required to select a ‘date’ on the Portal das Comunidades Portuguesas Visas website. Please be informed that this date on the visa application form should be the same date on which you wish to submit your visa application at VFS Mumbai or VFS Pune and can be selected when scheduling your appointment accordingly on our website. Important note to agents: Please keep in mind that the Processing time will be 15 calendar days (including day of submission at VFS). Please note that applications submitted to other VFS-offices than New Delhi will take another two days due to postal delivery., unless extraordinary circumstances are demonstrated and approved by the Embassy. For applications submitted in Mumbai to the Portugal Consulate in Goa, a minimum of 15 Calendar days is required (excluding VFS handling time) before the date of travel. Failure to comply with the application procedures will be met by a warning. Repeated misconduct may result in cancellation of an agent’s authorization.

Note: In case of travel to more than one Schengen country, please submit your application to the Embassy / Consulate where you will be staying for the maximum number of days. In case of equal stay, one has to apply at the Schengen country which is the first port of entry.

Passport Collection Process

The applicants may choose courier delivery or counter collection as a mode of the passport collection. As per the instructions from the Embassy third party collection of passport or documents is not permitted, except in the following scenarios:

If any of the above comes for passport collection they need to carry the following documents:

  • Applicant himself/herself.
  • Travel Agents/Representative is coming to submit the application he needs to carry a photo id of himself and an authority letter from the applicant / company only if the applicant has got his Biometrics recorded for Schengen Visa.
    • Immediate Family Member only (I.e. Parents, siblings, children) – Relationship proof needs to be furnished at the time of collection
    • One member of the group collecting for the entire group
    • A person collecting on behalf of Govt. officials, only if the authorization letter is on the Govt. letter head
    • Company Representative should present –Authorization letter on the Company letter head and the official ID card
    • Original ICR
    • Passport copy of the applicant(s)
    • Authorization letter from the applicant. (If one member of the group is collecting the passport on behalf of the entire group – authorization letter from all the other applicant(s) is mandatory)
    • Clear photocopy of the Govt. ID card will only be accepted at time of passport collection (eg. PAN Card, Driving License, Aadhar Card, Passport, Voter ID Card)

It is also mandatory to mention applicant’s personal address on the covering letter on which passport has to be couriered. Applicant's passport will not be couriered to their travel agencies 'addresses as directed by the Embassy.
Note*

  1. In case of a business applicant, if the applicant wishes to receive the passport to his/her office, then the same needs to be mentioned in the covering letter and the applicant’s office address needs to be mentioned in the courier request form.
  2. For application withdrawal cases, the passport needs to be collected from VFS Global only.

Embassy of Portugal require a minimum of 15 working days for visa processing once the application reaches Embassy.. Please note that applications submitted to other VFS-offices than New Delhi will take another two days due to postal delivery.. For applications submitted in Mumbai to the Portugal Consulate in Goa, a minimum of 15 Calendar days is required (excluding VFS handling time) before the date of travel. Applications accepted at The Portuguese visa application centre will be submitted on the next working day to the Embassy. In case an application needs to be referred to The Portuguese Immigration Service, processing time can prolong. If necessary Immigration Services holds the right to prolong processing time.

Collection of the processed passports from the VFS Portugal Visa Application Centres can be done on all working days from Monday to Friday except on holidays. Applicants can instantly track the status of their application online by clicking on Track your Application or by sending and SMS to VISA (space) PT (space) passport number to 57333. There will be no need to follow up with the Embassy or the call centre to ascertain when the passport will be returned.

Note :- For applicants who have applied via the Consulate General of Portugal, Goa and have received a stamp on their visa to ‘present yourself personally at the Portugal Consulate upon return’ at the earliest can go to the Consulate General of Portugal, Goa on any visa working day (Monday-Thursday) except certain public holidays between 14:30 and 15:00.

Applicants are required to carry your original Indian passport and Flight Boarding Pass/Cards.

FAQs

A Visa is an authorisation issued by the representative of the Government of a country permitting a person not resident in that country to enter its boundaries.

In India, The Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi and The Consulate General of Portugal in Goa are the sole representatives of Portugal, who issue visas for their country.

Depending on your length of stay and purpose of travel, you should log on to the website and check if you are eligible/require a visa.

The Embassy and Consulate General of Portugal issues visas for Portugal and Schengen visa which is common to all Schengen States. The Schengen visa issued by the Embassy/Consulate gives an applicant access to 25 Schengen countries in totality.

However, the Schengen Visa applications will only be accepted by Portugal Visa Application Centre if Portugal is the country of maximum stay. Should the duration of the stay be the same in several Schengen States, then Portugal must be the first point of entry.

VFS Global Services Pvt. Ltd. is the preferred outsourced partner to Embassy & Consulate General of Portugal in India. VFS Global Services Pvt. Ltd’s Portugal Application Centres function as collection and processing centres for Portuguese Visas.

Applicants are free to apply up to 180 days prior to their date of travel. The Embassy/Consulate recommends that you apply atleast 3 weeks prior to your date of travel to accommodate any unplanned processing delays.

The Portugal Visa Application Centre does not prepare visa applications, but accepts and processes applications in accordance with the Embassy/Consulate’s instructions.

You can send a Friend/Relative/Representative or a Travel Agent with an authorization letter by you to submit your application only if you have already provided Bio metrics after 2 November 2015 for Schengen in India, Otherwise you will have to come on your own to provide Biometrics ,For collection of passport only Applicant/Family member within Blood Relation/ in case of group any one applicant travelling in the same group/ person from same company can collect the passport /documents, He/she needs to carry a Photo Id of himself/herself, applicant's passport photocopy and an authority letter from the applicant..

However, we are unable to accept any postal or courier applications as we are unable to issue a receipt for your visa fees and passport during the acceptance of the application.

Applicants / Travel Agents / Representatives are given a token at the entrance by our Security. Token numbers are displayed by the token display in accordance with number being processed to help you know when it’s your turn to be assisted.

Our officers at the counter will collect your visa application form to check for completion and to check if the photograph meets our required specifications. Your passport will be checked for validity, empty pages and previous travel information.

Your fees will be collected in accordance with the visa category you have chosen and the documents you submit will be arranged in the manner in which they are required by the Embassy/Consulate. Once your application is processed, you will be given a receipt for the fees received and an acknowledgement for the passport that we have accepted. You will also be informed about our collection procedure before you leave our counters.

The Portugal Visa Application Centre is an acceptance centre and does not advise/recommend any visa type to a prospective applicant. The Applicant will have to find out the visa category he is eligible for based on the purpose of travel.

 

If your application does not have the documents that are recommended by the Embassy/Consulate, you will be asked if you wish to proceed with the application as it is. With your consent, your application will be accepted and processed by us.

When your application is registered in our system, you will be issued a receipt for the fees that you have paid and an acknowledgement receipt of the acceptance of your passport will be given to you.

Once the application has been processed by the Portugal Embassy/Consulate and your passport has been returned to VFS,you will need to bring your receipt and acceptance proof with you for collection of your passport Passback timings are between 0900-1700hrs any working day.

The Portugal Visa Application Centre will not issue any documents other that the receipts for fees collected to an applicant.

In your absence, along with your receipt an authority letter from you in the name of your representative with his Identity proof Photo copy will be required, If you have already provided Bio metrics after 2 November 2015, Otherwise you will have to come on your own to provide Biometrics.

The Portugal Visa Application Centre can also courier your application to you as long as the address provided by you is serviceable by our courier partners, Blue Dart Couriers.

You will be asked if you would like your application couriered back to you at time your application is being registered in our system. You may make your preference known at that time itself as once your receipt is issued; we are unable to change your mode of return of your application after it has been processed.

The courier facility is an optional service with an additional fee of Rs.450/-(inclusive of applicable taxes) per visa application. This fee has to be paid at the time your document is being registered and cannot be opted for later.

As an application centre, the Portugal Visa Application Centre will not be able to guarantee you a visa. The issuance or refusal of a visa is the sole prerogative of The Embassy/Consulate General of Portugal. The Portugal Visa Application Centre cannot influence this decision in any way.

All fees are non-refundable and will not be returned if your visa application is refused by the Embassy/Consulate.

You will receive a letter from the Embassy/Consulate of Portugal in your return application which will mention the reasons for refusal.

You are free to reapply at anytime if your application has been refused earlier. There is no time gap to be observed after a Refusal to make a fresh application. However, it is recommended that you meet the reasons for the earlier Refusal before submitting a new application.

The instructions are mentioned on the refusal letter.

The Portugal Visa Application Centre do not accepts documents for legalization. You have to directly contact Embassy/Consulate.

Applications cannot be processed on the same day unless authorized by the Embassy/Consulate. Requests for Emergency visa processing cannot be accommodated.

You can ask for the Supervisor/Manager at any time during your enquiry if you are unhappy with the response you have received.
