Poland Imposes Stricter Visa Requirements for Foreign Students and Workers
Poland has introduced new, stricter migration rules targeting both international students and foreign workers, aimed at ensuring legal and purpose-specific entry into the country.
Language Proof Now Mandatory for Student Visa Applicants
Under the updated rules, international students applying for a Polish national visa must now present proof of at least B2-level proficiency in the language in which their academic program is conducted. This change is intended to prevent abuse of student visas for purposes other than education, such as unauthorized employment or irregular stay within the EU.
To enforce this more effectively, the Polish authorities have increased cooperation with university administrators. Institutions are now required to notify immigration authorities if a student holding a visa or residence permit is found not attending classes.
Work Visa Rules Tightened for Foreign Employees
The new policies also introduce tighter control on the employment of foreign nationals. Governors of Polish counties (voivodeships) are now tasked with drafting a list of occupations for which work permits will not be issued to foreigners. This aims to prioritize employment opportunities for Polish citizens in sectors where sufficient local workforce is available.
Poland Leads in EU Residence Permits
Poland was the leading EU country in issuing residence permits in 2023, granting 642,789 permits—17.2% of all such documents issued in the European Union. Out of these, 427,162 were granted for employment reasons, while 30,926 were issued for education purposes.
The tightened measures seek to strike a balance between economic demand for labor and the country’s broader immigration policy goals, promoting secure, legal, and controlled migration.
