Spain Eases Work Restrictions for Foreign Students Under New Rules
Spain Expands Work Opportunities for Foreign Students and Reinforces Pro-Migration Strategy
Spain’s Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, Elma Saiz, announced that international students will now be able to work up to 30 hours per week, even in sectors unrelated to their field of study. The new measures, effective this month, also introduce a fast-track process that allows students to remain in Spain for work after graduation without needing to return to their home country.
Saiz described the updated policy as a progressive model that counters anti-migration sentiment, stressing that migration is vital to Spain’s economic resilience.
Migration’s Role in the Spanish Economy
According to Saiz, three million internationals without social security currently occupy one in four jobs in Spain. Additionally, there are over 500,000 self-employed foreign nationals, many working in high-value sectors that support the country’s economic growth.
Labour Market Trends in 2024
Recent data from Spain’s Ministry of Labour and Social Economy shows a positive trend in the job market:
- The number of unemployed persons dropped by 146,738, a 5.42% decrease over the year.
- In December 2024, unemployment declined by 25,300, leaving 2,560,718 people out of work.
- At the same time, 42,700 new workers were registered with the Social Security system, bringing the total number of employed persons to 21,344,487.
Spain’s Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo reaffirmed that Spain will continue to be a driving force of economic growth in Europe through 2025 and 2026.
