Slovakia Proposes Extending National Visa Validity to 120 Days
Slovakia Moves to Extend National Visa Validity from 90 to 120 Days
The Slovak authorities have announced plans to extend the validity of national visas issued to third-country nationals from 90 days to 120 days. The move is designed to provide applicants with more time to secure a residence permit appointment via the country’s newly mandatory reservation system, and to reduce congestion at foreign police departments.
“The validity period of a national visa currently granted to third-country nationals for 90 days is to be extended to 120 days. The aim is to provide more time to secure an appointment in the reservation system, the use of which will be newly mandatory by law,”
stated the Ministry of Interior of Slovakia.
Government Approval & Timeline
The proposal was approved by the Slovak Cabinet on May 21, 2025, but must now be passed by the Parliament. If approved, the new rules are expected to take effect on July 1, 2025.
New Rules to Benefit Thousands of Foreign Workers
The upcoming visa extension is expected to benefit thousands of foreign nationals, especially those entering Slovakia for employment purposes. As Slovakia continues to face labor shortages in key sectors, the country is working to streamline migration pathways and strengthen international partnerships.
Strengthening Ties with China
In a move to boost economic relations, Slovakia has also expressed intent to grant up to 1,000 national visas annually to Chinese nationals. In addition, authorities are looking to ease visa procedures for Chinese entrepreneurs, positioning Slovakia as an attractive destination for investment and business development.
By simplifying national visa procedures for Chinese businesspeople, Slovakia aims to stimulate economic growth and deepen bilateral ties with China.
National Visas as a Gateway to Residence Permits
Foreign nationals planning to move to Slovakia for long-term purposes—particularly employment—must first obtain a national visa, which allows them to enter the country and initiate their residence permit application process.
According to Eurostat, Slovakia issued 642,710 residence permits in 2023, with 225,237 permits granted for work-related purposes, indicating a strong demand for foreign labor.
