Trump Warns Canada Over Palestine Recognition, Threatens Trade Deal
Shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to recognize Palestine, former U.S. President Donald Trump took to Truth Social early Thursday to issue a sharp warning to Canada regarding future trade relations.
In his post, Trump wrote: “Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a trade deal with them,” signaling possible diplomatic tension between Washington and Ottawa.
The statement came just ahead of Trump’s August 1 deadline for countries to finalize trade agreements with the United States, a date he has emphasized in recent weeks.
Earlier in July, Trump had already threatened to increase tariffs on Canadian imports not covered under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, raising them by 10% to reach a total of 35%. This latest warning follows a string of trade threats Trump has made toward Canada since starting his second presidential term in January.
Carney’s move aligns Canada with countries like France and the United Kingdom, who have also recently voiced support for Palestinian statehood amid growing international concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Following nearly two years of continuous Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip, humanitarian organizations have reported signs of famine. Dozens of deaths from malnutrition have been confirmed, and food scarcity continues to escalate.
Addressing the situation, Prime Minister Carney described the suffering in Gaza as “intolerable.” He reaffirmed Canada’s long-standing position in support of a two-state solution where a sovereign Palestinian state can exist alongside Israel in peace and security.
Carney also laid out the conditions for Canada’s official recognition. His government will move forward with recognition during a global leaders’ summit in September—provided the Palestinian Authority agrees to hold general elections in 2026, bars Hamas from participation, and commits to a demilitarized state.
In response, Israel issued a strong condemnation of Canada’s stance. The Foreign Ministry stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the decision rewards Hamas and undermines ongoing ceasefire negotiations. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar echoed this sentiment, claiming any future Palestinian state would effectively become a “Hamas state.”
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed France will formally recognize Palestine at the United Nations in September. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also stated that Britain would follow suit unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire and initiates a long-term peace process.
