Spain Launches Operation Reinforcing Border Posts at Algeciras, Tarifa and Ceuta This Summer
Last year, through this operation which was carried out in cooperation with the EU border Agency FRONTEX, Spain witnessed the execution of over 1,900 police actions and the identification of 2,034 individuals, AtoZSerwisPlus.pl reports.
In order to increase the capacities of the operation, the Ministry of Interior has revealed that 94 experts from sixteen countries will be actively participating in it this year.
The MINERVA operation controls irregular entries into the European Union via sea passenger transport lines. Through border inspections, it aims to detect methods used to hide individuals in various means of transportation, uncover instances of false document usage, and prevent fraudulent impersonation of legitimate document holders.
“In this way, cross-border crime is combated, in any of its manifestations, with special attention to the activity of criminal organisations dedicated to trafficking in human beings, the illicit trafficking of narcotics, weapons and vehicles and against jihadist terrorism,” the Ministry notes in a statement regarding the operation.
During the summer of 2022, Frontex data reveal that Spanish borders were crossed approximately 2,000 times daily, encompassing both legal and illegal crossings. Notably, during the first quarter of last year, a total of 1,780 cases were recorded, indicating a significant decline of 38 per cent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.
Due to the recent surge in human trafficking activities, the Spanish Civil Guard has achieved a significant accomplishment by successfully dismantling a criminal network operating in Gran Canaria.
In this regard, the same authority pointed out that the dismantled criminal network was specifically engaged in producing and distributing fraudulent documents. These documents were intended to aid migrants in irregular situations to travel from the Canary Islands to the Spanish mainland or other member states of the EU.
According to the Civil Guard, the apprehended individuals were found to be involved in the forgery of official documents issued by public organisations. These forged documents were provided to migrants, who were charged a fee for their services. The main objective of this criminal activity was to facilitate the departure of migrants from the Canary Islands.
