Slovakia Casts Doubt on Ukraine’s EU Membership Bid
The ruling Slovak party, Hlas-SD, has expressed dissatisfaction with Ukraine’s recent actions, stating that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy must demonstrate partnership through his decisions. The party referenced Slovakia's political, military, and humanitarian support for Ukraine during the Russian invasion.
To ease tensions, a meeting between officials from Slovakia, Ukraine, and the European Commission was initially scheduled for Tuesday but has been rescheduled for Thursday, according to Euractiv.
Zelenskyy Highlights EU Membership Progress
In a video address on January 7, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of productive negotiations in 2025 for Ukraine’s EU membership bid. He noted that discussions involved representatives from the Verkhovna Rada, government officials, and his office team. Zelenskyy praised Poland and Denmark as responsible partners in supporting Ukraine’s EU aspirations.
Poland, which assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union from Hungary on January 1, 2025, will lead during the first half of the year, followed by Denmark in the second half. Together with Ukraine, they have outlined plans to initiate EU membership talks in 2025.
EU Membership Talks Expected to Begin in 2025
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged Ukraine's significant progress toward EU accession in December 2024. She stated that negotiations on the fundamentals cluster could begin in early 2025, with additional chapters opening later in the year.
