Georgia’s Visa-Free Status Safe as Most EU States Oppose Suspension, Says Ambassador
Most EU Member States Oppose Suspending Georgia’s Visa-Free Regime, Says EU Ambassador
The European Union Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski, has stated that the majority of EU member states are not in favor of suspending visa-free travel for Georgian citizens. Speaking to journalists, Herczynski clarified that “for the moment, this is not the case,” indicating that no formal move is currently being considered.
EU Member States Reluctant to Penalize Ordinary Georgians
Ambassador Herczynski explained that one of the main reasons behind this position is the desire not to punish the Georgian public for the decisions and policies enacted by the country's political leadership.
"I would say that the majority of member states are against it for a very simple reason: we don’t want to make ordinary people pay for the decisions, actions, and legislation that have been enacted in Georgia by the authorities," he stated.
Poland Maintains Firm Stance on Suspension
In contrast, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has reiterated his support for restricting Georgia’s visa-free access to the Schengen Area. Despite acknowledging that a portion of Georgia’s population supports European values, Tusk stressed that decisive measures are necessary.
“Yes, this is also my intention, in the full knowledge that a third of Georgians are people who would very much like to share our values, but we know what the problem is,” said Tusk, referring to concerns over Georgia’s democratic trajectory.
EU Integration Process at Risk, Says Herczynski
Ambassador Herczynski also addressed concerns over Georgia’s EU integration process, warning that recent developments could jeopardize the country's future within the European Union.
“We are making rapid progress with Ukraine and Moldova, but with Georgia, the process has stalled. That is deeply regrettable — and I fear Georgia may lose its historic chance to join the European Union,” he said.
His comments reflect a growing divide between Georgia’s current pace and the accelerated EU accession efforts of neighboring countries.
Georgian Government Reaffirms EU Aspirations
Despite these concerns, Georgian officials have continued to emphasize their commitment to EU integration. In December 2024, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze reaffirmed that joining the European Union remains a top priority for the government. He also expressed confidence that Georgia would be among the best-prepared candidate countries by 2030.
