Border Measures in Netherlands Reduce Irregular Entry Without Economic Damage
Netherlands’ Border Controls Help Curb Irregular Migration With Limited Economic Impact
A recent survey reveals that the Netherlands' internal border checks, introduced in December 2024, have successfully reduced irregular migration without causing major economic or logistical issues.
Despite early concerns about traffic disruptions, the flexible implementation and small scale of the border checks have prevented delays or congestion. Dutch travelers’ association ANWB confirmed there have been no significant disruptions so far.
While the German-Dutch Chamber of Commerce (DNHK) estimated potential losses of up to €60 million per month for businesses, its members report that the actual economic impact has remained minimal and manageable.
The checks were first implemented at land borders with Germany and Belgium on December 9, 2024, as part of efforts to enhance national security and combat irregular migration and smuggling. Dutch Migration Minister Marjolein Faber emphasized the importance of the measure for tackling migrant-related challenges.
Although initially set for six months, the controls have been extended until December 8, 2025, due to high levels of asylum applications, secondary movements, and pressures on housing, healthcare, and education.
In its notification to the European Commission, the Dutch government cited a serious threat to public policy as justification for the extension.
The move reflects a broader trend in the EU, with several countries reinstating border controls to address migration-related challenges.
