You can apply for a short-term or long-term visa, depending on your stay in Albania. A short-term visa allows you to stay for 90 days in Albania, or a long-stay visa will enable you to remain in Albania for one year. If you plan to stay longer than three months with a long-term visa, you must apply for a residence permit.

Do I Need a Visa for Albania?

You do not need a visa for Albania if you are from one of the following countries:

1. Types of Albanian Visas

Albania issues several types of visas based on the purpose of travel. These are categorized into short-term (Type C) and long-term (Type D) visas:

  • Type C (Short-term): For stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period (e.g., tourism, business, family visits).
  • Type D (Long-term): For stays exceeding 90 days within a 180-day period (e.g., employment, study, family reunification, or residence).

2. Albania Visa Requirements

To apply for an Albanian visa, the following documents are typically required:

  1. A completed visa application form.
  2. A valid passport (minimum validity of 3 months beyond the intended stay).
  3. Two recent passport-sized photographs.
  4. Proof of purpose of travel (e.g., invitation letter, employment contract, enrollment letter, etc.).
  5. Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or rental agreement).
  6. Travel insurance covering the entire stay.
  7. Financial proof (bank statements, sponsorship letter, etc.).
  8. Round-trip flight reservation or travel itinerary.
  9. Proof of visa fee payment.
  10. Additional documents may be required based on the visa type (e.g., criminal record certificate for long-term visas).

3. How to Apply for an Albania Visa?

Follow these steps to apply:

  1. Determine the visa type based on your purpose of travel.
  2. Gather the required documents as per the visa checklist.
  3. Submit the application online via the Albanian e-Visa platform: https://evisa.ambasadat.gov.al.
  4. Attend the scheduled interview (if required) at the nearest Albanian embassy or consulate.
  5. Pay the visa application fee.
  6. Wait for the visa processing outcome.

4. How Long Does It Take to Process an Albania Visa?

  • Short-term visas: 10-15 working days.
  • Long-term visas: Up to 30 working days. Processing times may vary depending on the embassy, additional document requirements, or peak seasons.

5. What Is the Validity of an Albanian Visa?

  • Type C (Short-term): Valid for stays up to 90 days within 180 days.
  • Type D (Long-term): Valid for 1 year, typically issued for the purpose of residence, with multiple entries.

6. Albania Visa Fees

Visa fees vary based on nationality, visa type, and duration:

  1. Short-term visas (Type C): Approx. €40-€60.
  2. Long-term visas (Type D): Approx. €70-€100.
  3. Fees may differ for nationals of countries with reciprocal agreements.

7. Can My Albanian Visa Be Rejected?

Yes, an Albanian visa can be rejected due to:

  1. Incomplete or false documentation.
  2. Insufficient financial proof.
  3. Security concerns or criminal records.
  4. Lack of justification for the purpose of travel.
  5. Prior visa violations or overstays.

In case of rejection, you can appeal the decision or reapply with corrected documentation.

8. How Can I Request a Residence Permit for Albania?

To apply for a residence permit:

  1. Enter Albania with a valid Type D visa.
  2. Submit an application at the local Regional Directorate of Border and Migration within 30 days of arrival.
  3. Provide the required documents:
    • Application form.
    • Passport with a valid visa.
    • Proof of residence (rental contract or property ownership).
    • Purpose of stay (work contract, study enrollment, etc.).
    • Health insurance.
    • Financial means.
    • Criminal background check.
  4. Pay the residence permit fees.

9. Is Albania in Schengen?

No, Albania is not a part of the Schengen Area, but it allows visa-free entry to certain travelers, including:

  • Citizens of EU/EEA countries.
  • Nationals of countries with visa-free agreements with Albania.
  • Travelers holding a valid Schengen visa, UK visa, or US visa can enter Albania without an Albanian visa for up to 90 days.

Albania is, however, working towards EU membership, which may affect its visa policies in the future.

Other Visa Exemptions


You are also exempt from applying for a visa to Albania in the following instances:

  • If you are a foreign citizen who has a valid Schengen visa with multiple entries
  • If you are a foreign citizen with a valid multiple-entry UK or US visa who still has a valid visa.
  •  If you are a citizen from one of the countries listed below, you will travel to Albania visa-free from 20 April 2022 to 31 December 2022:
Exemptions for Visa to Albania Details
Schengen Visa Holders Foreign citizens with a valid Schengen visa (multiple entries).
UK or US Visa Holders Foreign citizens with a valid multiple-entry UK or US visa that is still valid.
Special Visa-Free Period (20 April 2022 to 31 December 2022) Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, India, Qatar, Oman, Thailand.
UAE Residence Permit Holders Foreign citizens with a 10-year UAE residence permit valid for at least 1 year after entry.
EU Residence Permit Holders Foreign citizens from the EU with a valid residence permit in an EU country.
  • If you are a foreign citizen who has a 10-year validity of the United Arab Emirates residence permit and is still valid for not less than one year after the date of entry in Albania.
  • If you are a foreign citizen from the EU and have a valid residence permit in one of the EU countries.
