Schengen Membership Key to Cyprus’ Security, Says President
Cyprus Aims for Schengen Accession by 2026, President Emphasizes National Security Benefits
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has reiterated that joining the Schengen Area will significantly strengthen Cyprus’ national security, countering early concerns about border implications and division within the Republic.
“We were hearing similar voices claiming Cyprus would either not accede or that accession would lead to partition. On the contrary, Schengen membership will enhance our security—it is our primary obligation to the people,” Christodoulides said.
?? Cyprus Set to Join Schengen Zone by 2026
President Christodoulides confirmed that Cyprus is on track to join the Schengen Zone by 2026, with technical preparations expected to conclude by the end of 2025.
“We will join the Schengen Zone in 2026. A huge effort is being made from a technical point of view,” he said, underlining the government's clear plan and strategic commitment.
He stressed that Cyprus' accession will benefit not only national security but also tourism, mobility, and cooperation within the European Union.
?? EU Backs Cyprus' Schengen Ambition
The European Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Magnus Brunner, recently confirmed that the European Commission is closely monitoring Cyprus’ progress toward meeting Schengen accession requirements.
Since 2021, Cyprus has received over €292 million in EU funding under the 2021–2027 financial framework to support border management, migration control, and police cooperation—key criteria for Schengen readiness.
Although Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004, it has not yet joined the Schengen Area. However, with ongoing reforms and international support, Cyprus is intensifying efforts to become the next Schengen member.
