Greece Voices Strong Support for Armenia’s EU Visa Liberalization
Greece Reaffirms Support for Armenia’s EU Visa Liberalisation Efforts
During a recent meeting between Armenia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Arpine Sargsyan, and Greek Ambassador Christos Sofianopoulos, both sides highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. Key areas of discussion included law enforcement, civil protection, migration, and citizenship.
Ambassador Sofianopoulos reiterated Greece’s full support for Armenia’s efforts to achieve visa-free travel with the European Union, calling the visa liberalisation process a shared priority. The Armenian Minister also stressed the potential for deeper collaboration at the ministerial level.
Visa Liberalisation a Top National Priority for Armenia
The visa-free travel agreement with the EU remains a top priority for Armenia. According to Nelly Davtyan, Head of the Migration and Citizenship Service at Armenia’s Interior Ministry, the country’s visa liberalisation action plan is expected to be finalised by June 2025. Once complete, the plan will no longer be open to negotiation and will outline clear targets and requirements based on other countries’ experiences.
One major condition for progressing in the visa dialogue is the implementation of biometric passports and ID cards. Davtyan acknowledged that introducing this infrastructure posed challenges, as it was a new development for the country. However, Armenia plans to resume issuing biometric passports and national ID cards in the first half of 2026, after a previous issuance period that ended in 2017.
While the timeline for achieving full visa-free travel with the EU remains uncertain, Armenian officials continue to work closely with European partners to meet the necessary technical and legal benchmarks.
