France Expels Algerian Diplomats Without Visas Amid Escalating Tensions
France has expelled Algerian diplomatic passport holders who entered without valid visas, intensifying ongoing tensions between the two countries. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed the move, calling it a “firm and proportionate” response to recent diplomatic friction.
“Our response is immediate, firm, and strictly proportionate at this stage. We’ve requested the return to Algeria of all agents holding diplomatic passports without valid visas,” Barrot said, as reported by Radio France Internationale. The French authorities have formally notified Algeria’s chargé d’affaires of the expulsions.
Barrot suggested the measure mirrored Algeria’s earlier actions, stating, “The Algerians wanted to dismiss our agents. We are dismissing theirs.” While he did not disclose the exact number of Algerian diplomats affected, Barrot emphasized France reserves the right to take further measures depending on how the situation evolves.
Algeria Demanded Expulsion of 15 French Officials
The escalation follows Algeria’s May 11 demand for the immediate expulsion of 15 French officials, who were sent to temporarily reinforce visa services in Algeria. Algerian authorities argued that the appointments were made without proper procedures and under irregular conditions, leading to the officials’ removal.
France, in response, described Algeria’s decision as unilateral and unjustified, adding that bilateral relations have remained frozen since Algeria expelled 12 other French officials the previous month.
The diplomatic standoff highlights ongoing instability in France–Algeria relations, particularly surrounding consular and immigration operations.
