Italian Work Permit & Visa Information and Processing Time

Work Permit Stage

  • The employer submits the work permit application (on behalf of the candidate) to the relevant regional authority.
  • Although exact timelines vary, many sources show around 13 weeks (45–65 working days) for a decision under normal conditions.
  • Note: Delays may occur if documents are incomplete, the region has a higher backlog, or the job category is more complex.

Visa Processing Stage (Type D / Work Visa)

  • After the work permit is approved, the candidate applies for the work (national) visa via the Italian Embassy/Consulate in their home country.
  • Standard processing typically takes 15–20 working days, but in some cases it can extend to 30–60 calendar days, depending on the workload or the need for additional checks.
  • Key point: The visa is valid only for the specific employer and job; non-EU nationals cannot simply apply without a confirmed job offer

Accommodation options

Italian companies provide shared accommodation for employees.

  • Rooms: Shared with 2-4 people, based on availability.
  • Facilities: Furnished rooms with shared kitchen and bathroom.
  • Restrictions: No accommodation for family members, partners, or pets.
