Travel Sector Pushes EU Minister to Secure Youth Mobility Pact
Youth Mobility Scheme Gains Support Amid Brexit’s Ongoing Impact on UK Tourism
The proposed youth mobility scheme, a long-standing item on the agenda between the UK and EU, would allow young people aged 18 to 30 from both sides to live, work, and study in each other’s countries without needing a long-term visa.
Current Visa Requirements Hindering Movement
At present, British citizens who wish to work or study in EU countries are required to apply for long-term visas and residence permits, which has become a significant obstacle for young professionals and students since Brexit.
Brexit’s Toll on UK Travel and Tourism
Since the UK’s departure from the EU, the British travel and tourism industry has faced major challenges. In a recent letter to the Minister for EU Relations, industry bodies such as ABTA and the Tourism Alliance stressed the urgency of finalizing the youth mobility deal, noting that employing UK nationals in EU countries has become increasingly difficult.
Supporting this concern, data from ABTA and SBiT show that international travel-related roles have dropped by 69% since Brexit—a sharp decline that highlights the need for improved mobility solutions.
Political Support and Conditions for the Deal
There is growing political momentum behind the proposal, with many UK MPs voicing support for the youth mobility programme. If approved, it would significantly ease access to the EU for young Brits and open the UK to more young Europeans.
However, the UK is expected to introduce several conditions as part of the negotiations. One key area of focus is the music and performing arts sector. Since Brexit, British musicians have struggled to tour across Europe due to the 90-day visa-free limit in the Schengen Area, which is often insufficient for multi-country tours across the 29-member bloc.
A youth mobility agreement could potentially remove these logistical barriers, offering young artists and professionals a more flexible framework to live, work, and perform in Europe.
