Student Visa Applications From India, Nepal and UAE to Be Prioritised by Finland
Finland to Prioritise Student Residence Permits From India, Nepal & UAE This Summer, Delays Expected for Dependents
In preparation for the academic year starting in September 2025, Finnish diplomatic missions in New Delhi, Kathmandu, and Abu Dhabi will prioritise the processing of student residence permit applications, according to a press release by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
Dependent Applications May Face Delays
As a result of this prioritisation, family members of main applicants may experience delayed decisions on their residence permit applications. Authorities have advised dependents to submit applications outside the peak months of June and July, during which student applications will take precedence.
After this period, applications for family reunification and other residence permits are expected to be processed more promptly.
Requirements for a Finnish Study Residence Permit
Applicants for a study-based residence permit in Finland must:
- Provide proof of admission to a Finnish university, college, or recognised academic programme
- Demonstrate that their academic programme leads to a degree or professional qualification
- Present documentation for inter-institutional or exchange programmes, if applicable
In addition, students bringing family members must ensure:
- Legalised documentation proving the family relationship
- Certified translations of all documents into Finnish, Swedish, or English
- Proof of sufficient financial resources for both themselves and their dependents
Student Permit Holders Must Meet Financial Requirements
As of 2024, Finland has introduced specific income thresholds for residence permit applicants. These thresholds vary based on the applicant’s category and region of residence:
- Specialists: Minimum gross monthly salary of €3,638
- Seasonal workers: Minimum gross monthly salary of €1,399
- Students: Must demonstrate access to adequate funds to support themselves and any accompanying family members
Income requirements may also differ depending on whether the applicant lives in metropolitan areas, where living costs are higher.
