Poland Enhances Security at Borders
The Polish Defence Minister, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that his country is planning to build the barriers, with the plan already being prepared, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
Poland’s Expenditure for Border Security Is the Highest Ever, Minister Says
The Defence Minister also pointed out that the budget allocated for the purpose of protecting Poland’s borders from irregular migration has been the highest. He told Radio Zet that the increased presence of forces close to the border has only further enhanced the security.
This measure is being implemented after a surge in irregular migration that was noticed in 2022, originating from Belarus. The increase in irregular migrants was considered an orchestrated move organised by Belarus and Russia, in an effort to destabilise Poland and the European Union, especially after the war in Ukraine.
The 5.5-meter fence topped with wire has a cost of $407 million and it was completed on June 30, 2022.
Migration at Eastern Land Border Down by 5% in 2024
According to Frontex, the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency, some 1,432 border crossings were recorded in the first quarter of 2024, marking a decrease of five per cent compared to the same period in 2023.
The same source reveals that Ukraine was the main country of origin for migrants during this period. In March of 2024, the total number of border crossings reached 522.
In 2023, the border crossings at the Eastern Land border, which is the longest in Europe, stood at 5,608. This border which includes EU countries like Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia,
Poland, Slovakia and Romania, bordering the non-EU countries of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova. The main countries of origin for migrants in this route for 2023, include Ukraine, Afghanistan and Syria.
The same border became an apple of discord between Poland, Lithuania, on the EU’s behalf, and Russia and Belarus. In 2021, a dozen migrants died in the cold as they were left stranded in a village between the two countries, as a result of a pushback on both sides of the border.
