Hungary and Slovakia to Increase Border Crossing Points for Improved Connectivity
Hungary and Slovakia Agree to Expand Border Connectivity Through New Crossings and Infrastructure
Hungary and Slovakia have agreed to expand the number of border crossing points between the two nations as part of a broader initiative to improve regional connectivity and strengthen bilateral ties. Announcing the agreement, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized that the shared border—Europe’s longest—should “connect rather than divide.”
Number of Crossings Nearly Doubled
Historically, the 654-kilometre border between Hungary and Slovakia featured just 22 official crossing points. However, under a previous agreement between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, that number has now increased to 40 crossing points, with further improvements planned.
Szijjártó highlighted that the additional crossings will particularly benefit residents of southern Slovakia and help drive economic growth on both sides of the border.
Three New Bridges to Improve Accessibility
As part of the expansion plan, three new bridges will be constructed:
- A pedestrian and cyclist bridge in Dunakiliti, encouraging eco-friendly mobility
- A freight bridge near Esztergom, facilitating commercial transport
- A third bridge over the Tisza River at Cierna, enhancing regional access
Road and Rail Enhancements
Beyond bridges, Hungary plans to extend the M2 motorway northwards, build three additional roads, and renovate older border crossings to ensure smoother traffic flow.
Rail travel is also set to improve, with new cross-border train services planned to better connect the two countries and promote sustainable transportation.
Emphasis on Emergency and Healthcare Cooperation
Szijjártó stressed the need for closer cross-border collaboration in areas such as emergency response and healthcare services. He reaffirmed Hungary’s commitment to delivering on all infrastructure and cooperation goals set forth in the agreement.
