Foreign Nationals in EU Required to Apply for UK ETA from January 8
As of January 8, 2025, non-EU and non-EEA nationals residing in EU member states who are visa-exempt for UK travel must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the UK. This requirement extends to legal EU residents who do not hold an EU passport but are eligible for visa-free entry.
Who Is Affected?
- Visa-Exempt Non-EU/EEA Nationals in the EU: These individuals now require an ETA to enter the UK.
- Non-Visa-Exempt Nationals in the EU: Those who are not permitted visa-free entry must continue to follow the standard UK visa application procedures.
ETA Application Process
- Fee: €11 (£10), applicable to all applicants, including children and infants.
- Validity: The ETA is valid for two years and allows multiple trips, provided each visit does not exceed the permitted stay period.
- Application: Can be completed online or through the UK ETA app.

The UK government introduced the ETA to enhance border checks and prevent misuse of the immigration system.
EU Nationals to Require ETA Starting April 2025
From April 2, 2025, EU and EEA nationals will also need an ETA to enter the UK as part of the final rollout phase. Applications for EU citizens will open on March 5, 2025.
Similar EU Scheme on the Horizon
The EU is set to introduce its own travel authorisation system, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), later this year. Travellers with visa-free access to the EU will need to apply for ETIAS, which will cost €7 and remain valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
