MEPs Give the Green Light to New Migration and Asylum Pact
Announcing the news, the EU Parliament said that one of the main focuses of this pact is solidarity and responsibility-sharing among the member states of the EU, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
To reduce the burden on countries that register high numbers of migrants, the other member states will contribute by relocating asylum seekers to their territories or by offering financial, operational, and technical support to the member states who decide to offer shelter to migrants.
As part of the efforts to address crises and unforeseen surges in arrivals of migrants, the pact also introduces a crisis and force majeure regulation.
In line with the new rules, member states that face an influx of third-country nationals will be provided with support.
Moreover, the member states will make sure that migrants are no longer being instrumentalised by third countries that want to destabilise the bloc.
Member States Will Implement Pre-Entry Screening & Expedite Asylum Procedures
As part of the new pact, the EU Parliament stressed that claims for asylum would be examined more quickly and that there would be more effective returns for those who did not meet the rules to remain in the EU.
As explained, people who do not meet the rules to enter the bloc will have to undergo a pre-entry screening procedure.
This procedure, which will last up to seven days, includes identification, the collection of biometric data as well as well as health and security checks.
The pact also focuses on expediting asylum procedures. A common procedure will be adopted by all member states to streamline the granting and the withdrawal of international protection.
The procedure includes a shorter processing deadline for unfounded claims.
In addition to the above-mentioned, MEPs have agreed to oblige the member states to ensure equivalent reception standards for those seeking asylum, covering housing, education, and healthcare.
Asylum applicants will also be permitted to start working six months after filing their application at the latest.
However, the EU plans to keep strict rules in place to discourage those who have already filed an asylum application in one member state from moving to another.
Among some other changes, MEPs have also endorsed the Eurodac regulations. In line with this regulation, the member states will have the right to collect the data of those arriving at the bloc, including facial images and fingerprints.
